Dr. Jim Russell

Dr. Russell was a certified psychological examiner with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE Certificate # 0376914 valid until 12/29/2018) a National Certified Counselor (Certificate # 46313); and, he is a member of the American Counseling Association (5142314). He is licensed to practice as a Counselor in Missouri (CS 001736).

For decades, his Clinical Practice has focused on assessing and counseling people who have special learning needs. He is working with Dr. Robert Bergamini, Dr. Robert Hansen and Jill Turec MA Special Education at St. John’s Mercy Pediatric Hospital, and Friends of Children With Cancer, providing cognitive evaluations for children who have acquired learning disorders due to receiving treatment for cancer. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Science at Webster University for more than the seven years. He instructed Graduate Students; and, he provided over 1000 hours of Graduate Students practicum supervision. Dr. Russell has provided over 1000 hours of direct clinical supervision for Provisional Counselors seeking to complete a counseling license. The Provisional Counselors under his direct supervision have provided over 25,000 hours of services in the community.

Dr. Russell has presented hundreds of workshops across the country pertaining to learning disabilities and ADHD. He worked with a research team in Kansas City, studying the effects of providing extended time on examinations. The team leader presented the results at the Learning Disability Association International Conference 2004 & 2005 Poster Sessions. Dr. Russell is working as an educational consultant with The St. Michael School. He is presently serving on the Board of Directors for the Lewis and Clark Charter School, the Miram School Learning Center Advisory Committee, the St. Louis Community College Access Office Advisory Committee; and, he is on the Professional Advisory Board for the Learning Disablities Association of Missouri.

Dr. Russell lives in Webster Groves Missouri, where he continues to marvel at how wonderful human beings can be—when they try.

Volunteer for the Learning Disabilities Associations: National – Served on the Adult Issues Special NIFL Training Project, served on the 2001 Mental Health Quality of Life Subcommittee, wrote articles for the LDA Newsbriefs.

State – Dr. Russell was the Keynote speaker for the 2006 State Conference, in St. Louis where he was awarded a Life Time Achievement Award. He is serving on the LDA of Missouri Professional Advisory Board, he was the Past Co-President (1999-2000) of the Missouri State Board, he served on the 2002 LDA Conference Committee Program, was the winner of the 2001 LDA Professional of the Year Award, he served as Volunteer Coordinator for the 2001 and 2000 LDA Golf Tournaments, was the winner of the LDA President’s Award in 1998, he served as the Chairperson for the 1998 Post Secondary Night program.

Local – serving on the St. Louis Learning Disabilities, Inc., Speaker’s Bureau: he served as a presenter for the 2001 thru 2004 LDA Teacher Training Institute; he was a presenter for the LDA 2005-2008 Professional Development Institute. Dr. Russell has written several articles for the St. Louis Learning Disabilities, Inc. Newsletter.

This presentation will provide a description of the twice-exceptional (2e) person from childhood through adulthood. The main points covered during the presentation will be the cognitive and emotional difficulties experienced by the person, the identification process, how the “Average Person Standard” may affect eligibility for accommodations, and transitioning into college when a person has dyslexia.
